City: Szentendre
Address: H-2000 Szentendre, Sztaravodai út.
Tel.: +36 26 502 500

The largest open air museum, the Skanzen, is located right next to the town of Szentendre, about 5 Km from the border of Budapest. Walking around the museum "villages" visitors can get to know the typical buildings and lifestyles of seven Hungarian great regions: the Great Plains, the Upper-Tisza-region, the Kisalföld, Western - Transdanubia, Southern-Transdanubia, Upland Market Town and the Bakony, Balaton-Uplands.

The buildings are arranged just like they were in the original villages, and you can get to know the daily lives of adults and children through the objects they used.

Our visitors can not only observe buildings, but they can also try the various household activities and outdoor games the peasants were doing. You will learn canvas painting, life in the smoke house, how to make candles, traditional Hungarian honey-cookie making, etc. If you get tired, you can hop on one of the horse-carriages. In the area of the Alföld region, there is a great restaurant where you can taste the traditional Hungarian recipes.

From April 2009, a small train of 100 passenger capacity, built in 1930, will scroll through the 60 hector open air museum to make the visit even more interesting.

The museum lies in the Danube-Ipoly National Park, right below the Pilis mountains, offering not only a cultural but also environmental experience.

Open from April 1st to October 31st, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Mondays)
